Report of the Special Rapporteur on freedom of assembly and of association

The Report of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on freedom of assembly and of association on global trends and growing authoritarianism, addressed to the Human Rights Council, was published.

The United Nations expert looks at global trends related to the enjoyment of the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, the spread of negative narratives about human rights defenders, the emergence of restrictive laws, including laws on the so-called foreign agents, frequent attacks on environmental activists, etc.

The report also looks at abuses in the application of new technologies, which autocratic governments increasingly decide to do.

The report provides recommendations to states, the business sector, digital platforms, civil society, international organizations and other actors on how to preserve space for civil action and the enjoyment of basic human rights and freedoms, including the right to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.
